What is a Padel Court?

A padel court is approximately 25% smaller than a traditional tennis court, featuring a net in the middle and surrounded by a 12-foot-high fence. This fence is not just for containment; it’s an integral part of the game, allowing the ball to bounce off the walls similar to squash. Invented in 1969 by Enrique Corcuera in Mexico, padel courts have become a distinctive feature in modern sports facilities.

What is Padel Tennis?

Padel tennis is a dynamic blend of tennis and squash, offering a unique and engaging playing experience. While the scoring system mirrors that of tennis, the game is played with balls that have slightly less pressure. One of the main distinctions is the use of solid, stringless bats instead of traditional tennis rackets. The surrounding walls and fences are in play, adding an exciting dimension to the sport as players can bounce the ball off them, much like in squash.

Why is Padel Tennis So Popular?

Padel tennis has surged in popularity due to its social, fun, and accessible nature. Here’s why players love it:

Social and Fun: Padel tennis is inherently social, encouraging interaction and camaraderie among players.

Easy to Learn: The game is straightforward and easy to pick up, making it ideal for beginners.

Low Physical Demands: Unlike tennis, padel tennis is less physically demanding, allowing more people to enjoy the game without needing high fitness levels.

The Installation Process

Installing a padel court involves several critical steps to ensure durability and safety:

Solid Foundation: All courts need to be built on a robust foundation, which can be challenging for outdoor installations due to varying ground conditions.

Wind Load Assessment: Each outdoor site must be evaluated for wind loads to guarantee safety and stability. Steel structures and glass walls are exposed to wind, requiring reinforcement.

Reinforcement: For outdoor courts, a 100 m² glass surface with 80×80 mm reinforcement tubes is recommended for additional column strength.

Opal (our GM) had the pleasure of speaking with Paul Regan; Founder, PRO Padel Courts Ltd after the completion of two successful projects, one for a residential property and one for a local leisure facility!

See what he had to say…

ISW: Why Padel, what got you here?

PAUL: I have worked in the tennis industry all my life and around 5-6 years ago padel was brought to my attention as a number of my clients were asking questions about ’this new sport’ – so I duly spent time researching the sport, the wider landscape and how our European cousins were implementing , what has been branded as “the world’s fastest growing sport”.

ISW: What makes PRO Padel Court Ltd different from other suppliers?

PAUL: We are the only UK padel court manufacturer. Through our research it was obvious that our climate is different from the south of Spain, which is where most of the world’s padel courts are built. I therefore wanted to develop a court in the UK for the UK with a ten year warranty against rust and corrosion to withstand the Northern European climate. We also source and fabricate UK steel and use a thicker stronger gauge than most of the imported courts. Our focus is on quality and providing our customers with the best padel courts only can buy – this is demonstrated by our client base, which includes The Queens’ Club, London and Notts County FC.

ISW: Have you had any challenges along the way?

PAUL: Many! Any new business in an emerging market where you are trying innovate and disrupt the global trend is going to be challenging. We have, however, learnt a lot and we have recently developed a new production process and premises which will enable us to improve the quality further and cater for the huge demand that we have for courts.

ISW: What are you business goals over the next three years?

PAUL: Our goals are to keep building great quality courts and to keep improving what we do. We would like to install 50 courts in 2023 and more in 2024 and beyond.

ISW: What is your prediction for the future of Padel in the UK?

PAUL: Padel is here to stay despite what the sceptics say! This is no ‘flash in the pan’ or ‘fad’ – I do understand the scepticism as padel has had a few false starts in the UK over the past 10 years however, now that more people have seen it and played it there is no going back – the growth over the next 5 years will be colossal. The sport is fun, sociable, inclusive and far easier to play than tennis. How could it fail?

ISW: And finally, name three people (alive or dead) you would love to play Padel with…

PAUL:

  1. My dad, who sadly passed away and he didn’t really get to understand what padel was or indeed what we were doing. I hope he’s proud!
  2. I am a Liverpool fan so I would love to share the court with the Liverpool boys but if I had to pick one, it would be the legend Jurgen Klopp.
  3. Anyone who thinks padel isn’t for them!

Thanks Paul!
